Extracurricular (2018)

Extracurricular is a 3 episode limited interview series featuring artists discussing their extracurricular activities. The series was commissioned by, and produced for Akimbo Art Productions.

Episode 1 | Shellie Zhang

Multidisciplinary artist Shellie Zhang unites both past and present iconography with the techniques of mass communication, language and sign, Zhang’s work deconstructs notions of tradition, gender, identity, the diaspora, and popular culture while calling attention to these subjects in the context and construction of a multicultural society. She is interested in exploring how integration, diversity and assimilation is implemented and negotiated, how this relates to lived experiences, and how culture is learned, relearned and sustained.

In this episode of Extracurricular, Shellie and I meet at Tea Base, a community arts space located in the heart of Chinatown, to discuss ice cream, community making, and collective care.


Episode 2 | Michèle Pearson Clarke

Michèle Pearson Clarke is a Trinidad-born artist who works in photography, film, video and installation. Using archival, performative and process-oriented strategies, her work explores the personal and political possibilities afforded by considering experiences of emotions related to longing and loss.

In this episode of Extracurricular, Michèle and I meet at Lamport Stadium during her weekly football game, to discuss notions of masculinity, the aesthetics of sports, and queer community building.


Episode 3 | Geneviève Wallen

As a curator and art historian, Geneviève Wallen is interested in issues of ethnocultural representational spaces in Canada.

In this final episode of Extracurricular, Geneviève and I meet at Black Creek Community Farm to discuss the future of sustainability, food knowledge and its dissemination, and self care.
